Taking good care of any decking is of paramount importance, not only does this improve the longevity of your deck but it also enhances its natural beauty and feel. Although all Decks-Direct Softwood decks and framing are pressure treated (tanalised) to provide up to 10 years protection from the elements, we only use and always recommend using a good quality Decking Oil (clear or coloured) and although you can purchase cheaper products that may look similar once applied we do not recommend the use of water-based products as these just wash away just like cheap shed and fence paint does. By using Quality Decking Oil, you will protect increase the lifespan of your new deck and improve its resistance to wood rot, decay and insect attack and even help prevent juice and wine stains. Decks-Direct recommend and only use Decks-Direct Decking Oil and can provide you with a range of products that offer great value for money without compromising on effectiveness or quality.

Always clean your deck thoroughly at least once a year.

Remember your new Decks-Direct deck is an addition to your home. Just like inside of your home it requires regular cleaning and maintenance to look good and remain safe. Decks made up of composite materials like Trex® require much less maintenance than a wooden deck, however just remember, there is no such thing as a self-cleaning deck or a deck that lasts forever, with proper treatment and maintenance who is to say your wood deck will not last 20 years plus.

All decks need an annual clean (wood or composite) to remove winter fallout, especially if your deck is near to trees or large bushes. Spring is a good time to clean and protect your deck ready for the summer ahead when it is dry and moderately warm. The chemicals in cleaners and sealers can harm or kill plants that are hit with overspray. Cover all nearby vegetation with a tarp or plastic sheet before you start but drape it loosely to allow air circulation. Apply an appropriate deck-cleaning solution with a sprayer or roller to kill mould and bacteria build ups. Use a yard brush to scrub the deck where it is especially dirty and where mould or mildew might lurk. (Power washers and pressure washers are the quickest way to clear residue, but you risk gouging the wood if the pressure is too high. A garden hose outfitted with a good jet type nozzle will work just as good.

Always cover nearby shrubbery before you begin.
